“The coaches see that I can throw the ball a little bit, so hopefully I might have something in the future, but we’ll see. “It was a big moment for me, especially confidence of being able to throw it,” Meyers said. Meyers, who said he tried and failed a handful of pass plays in college at North Carolina State, said he hopes what he showed Sunday can translate into trust with his coaches to give him more opportunities. With Edelman, another former quarterback who’s delivered on his fair share of trick pass plays with the Patriots, still out, Meyers, at least for now, can take his spot for that role.īill Belichick was impressed enough with the play, saying it was a “nice pass” from Meyers and that the Patriots know he has that ability. “I’m pretty sure Julian Edelman is somewhere smiling and, but nervous at the same time, if you know what I mean.” “Once a quarterback, always a quarterback,” Newton said. It didn’t matter that Meyers hadn’t regularly thrown passes since high school he was ready for the moment, and he delivered. I’m like, ‘What are you doing?’ He says, ‘I got to take off another one, bro.’ And he did pretty good without being able to, say, warm up or anything.”Īnd even better considering the stakes, with the Patriots in need of a win in primetime against a tough opponent. I said, ‘Don’t panic now.’ He said, ‘I got to take off my gloves. “And I was teasing with him before the play was called. ![]() “I think Jakobi has always been able to throw it. “I’m not going to confirm nor deny that,” Newton joked. But the Patriots quarterback declined to take credit for teaching him the play that unfolded Sunday night. When Meyers was in high school and still a quarterback, he attended Cam Newton’s football camp in Georgia, where he had the chance to be coached by Newton. It wasn’t anything Newton hadn’t seen before. “I was so ecstatic after the play happened, I don’t even remember getting hit. “I don’t even remember the hit, honestly,” Meyers said. But he trusted Burkhead to make a play, as well as his own natural passing ability, and even took a shot from Ravens defensive lineman Derek Wolfe after releasing the pass.īut Meyers got right back up, jumping into the arms of teammate Joe Thuney and celebrating with him and Damiere Byrd. If Burkhead truly wasn’t open and the play broke down, Meyers said he probably would have just tried running back to the line of scrimmage to avoid a negative play. There weren’t really any other options for Meyers. “Put the ball in the sky and let him take a chance on the ball. ![]() I knew I had Rex out there and I mean, Rex is a playmaker, a former basketball player. I was surprised it came up during the rain game, but I still got it a little bit. “I just never knew when it was going to come up. “It’s something we practiced the last couple of weeks,” Meyers said.
